Bootcamp 2024: Shaping a new strategy for Kalundborg Symbiosis
Symbiosis collaboration between Denmark and Mexico
GIA project peer reviews

Good energy, a spirit of dialogue, active participation, and cooperation were the buzzwords of the annual strategic session of Kalundborg Symbiosis, held at Helix Lab on September 10. The day kicked off with a warm welcome from our chairman, followed by thought-provoking presentations on topics essential to the future of our collaboration, including the 2030 Action Plan, Campus Kalundborg, the Green Transportation Hub, and the potential of biosolutions. We also explored visionary concepts such as the export of Danish collaboration models, organic building materials, and updates on symbiotic water projects. The event concluded with a workshop where participants provided input to guide the future strategic priorities of Kalundborg Symbiosis.

Symbiosis Run

On September 29, a vibrant community of approximately 300 children and adults came together to partake in the 10th edition of the Symbiosis Run organized by Kalundborg IF in partnership with Kalundborg Symbiosis and Lerchenborg Estate.
Thank you to Brian for the picture that captures the emotions of the event!

As international experts, specialists from the Kalundborg Symbiosis administration office and the Viegand Maagøe Industrial Team were assigned by the Danish Energy Agency to support the collaboration with the Renewable Energy Agency of the State of Nuevo León (AERNL), Mexico. Their role was to improve energy and resource efficiency, reduce associated GHG emissions, and lower the need for new investment in energy infrastructure. The purpose of this assignment was to prepare the implementation of the Denmark-Nuevo León work program on industrial symbiosis.

The assignment included the following activities:
Scoping workshops with AERNL and stakeholders where the experts introduced the  concept during workshops aimed at determining focus areas, key questions, and relevant cases in Nuevo León, aligned with the state’s current efforts.
Identification of stakeholders and suitable areas for industrial symbiosis
Planning of the training program, screenings, and toolbox with focus on creating a plan for future work, including screenings, training programs, and tools to promote and facilitate industrial symbiosis in the Greater Monterrey Area.

Symbiosis chronicles: A journey through history
Awards and recognitions of Kalundborg Symbiosis

One of the topics discussed during the GIA Peer Review in Kalundborg was the awards and recognitions that Kalundborg Symbiosis has garnered for its green initiatives. Among the notable awards mentioned were:
– The honor from The Danish Society of Engineers in 1991 for Good Environmental Management
– The environmental excellence award from the County of West Zealand in 1992
– CEFIC’s Environment Award in 1992
– The prestigious Win Win Gothenburg Sustainable Award in 2018 (in the photo)
– Human Settlement Award (SCAHSA) in 2018 for the “Global Green Park” category.

These achievements exemplify Kalundborg Symbiosis’s leadership in sustainability and its commitment to fostering a circular economy.

In September and October, the GIA (Green Industrial Areas) project was highly active, conducting a series of peer reviews in six industrial areas: Suwałki (Poland), Neustrelitz and Lübesse (Germany), Kaigu (Latvia), Jyväskylä (Finland), and Kalundborg (Denmark). These peer reviews supported the ongoing development of the GIA project’s Guideline for the Certification of Green Industrial Areas and Compendium of Good Practices in Energy Transition, both aimed at establishing transnational sustainability standards across the Baltic Sea Region.
As part of their involvement in the respective transnational work groups, Sif and Nadejda participated in peer reviews, visiting the Suwałki and Neustrelitz pilot areas to assess their progress and provide feedback.
During the Kalundborg session, held on October 1–2, participants from Finland and Sweden explored Kalundborg Symbiosis’ innovative approach to sustainable industrial collaboration. Highlights included visits to the solar park at Lerchenborg and Kalundborg Bioenergy, where renewable energy efforts and odor pollution reduction strategies were showcased. Additionally, the group toured Kalundborg Utility to learn about circular water management, and Aliscon, where they discussed ESG reporting. These peer reviews have provided valuable insights to further the project’s sustainability objectives.
