Green steam at the Symbiosis

Asnæs Power Plant has always played an important role for Kalundborg Symbiosis: by using excess capacity, a joint steam supply was established in the 1980s, and the green pipes are still running today as a visible proof of cooperation and innovation.

Today, the new wood chip-fired unit 6 at Asnæs Power Station wood-fired power plant block, Asnæs 6, supplies green district heating and process steam to the Symbiosis, as well as power to the Zealand electricity grid.

The new wood-fired block 6 at Asnæs Power Plant works in conjunction with the plant's electric boiler and Kalundborg Utility's large heat pump. Green power is thus used when available at competitive prices, while wood chips from sustainably managed forests ensure that Kalundborg's needs for process steam for industry, district heating for homes and electricity are met entirely without the use of coal and with high security of supply and flexibility.

The new turbine has a capacity of 25 MW electricity and 129 MJ/s process steam and district heating. To produce electricity, steam must be fed into the turbine at a pressure of 100 bar and a temperature of 540 degrees.
