Kalundborg aims to strengthen its role as a global benchmark for circular and sustainable industrial collaboration. This is the core of the new strategy leading up to 2035, which was adopted at the general meeting. At the same time, a new leadership team was elected, with the re-election of Stine Gry Roland of Novo Nordisk as chair and Ghita Hansen of Novonesis as the new vice chair.
New Strategy Toward 2035
With Strategy 2035, Kalundborg Symbiosis is setting the course for the next phase in the development of Kalundborg as both a strong local industrial collaboration and an international benchmark for industrial symbiosis.
The ambition is to further develop Kalundborg as the world’s leading example of industrial symbiosis in practice. The strategy focuses on:
– Developing 10 new symbiosis streams between companies
– Strengthening the framework conditions for sustainable and circular industry
– Positioning Kalundborg as a reference point for learning, collaboration, and knowledge exchange on industrial symbiosis
The Symbiosis partnership is based on the principle that residual flows—such as water, energy, and materials—are utilized as resources across companies, thereby reducing resource consumption while creating economic value.
“Over the past ten years, the framework conditions for Kalundborg have changed significantly, laying the groundwork for new development and strengthened collaboration. This has been central to the work on Strategy 2035. The designation of Kalundborg as an industrial park and the establishment of Campus Kalundborg, which brings education, research, and innovation closer to industry, are just two examples of this positive development.
“I look forward—together with the board and the secretariat—to embarking on the next chapter in the development of symbiosis. With Strategy 2035, we will ensure that Kalundborg Symbiose and the area’s framework conditions continue to be strengthened, and that Kalundborg is positioned as an international reference point for industrial symbiosis,” says Stine Gry Roland.
New Board to Drive Development
The election of a new board marks an important step in the implementation of the strategy.
Stine Gry Roland, Head of Public Affairs for Novo Nordisk’s Production division, will continue as chair. She has extensive experience with board work, manufacturing, strategy and business development, partnerships, as well as in-depth knowledge of Kalundborg and the symbiosis collaboration.
“Building on the trusting and innovative collaboration between the partners, we have already come a long way and stand on a strong foundation for the next ten years of development. I would like to thank everyone for their trust and the excellent collaboration—and I look forward to continuing this shared journey together with the board and the secretariat as we further develop the symbiosis initiative,” says Stine Gry Roland.
Ghita Hansen, Vice President at Novonesis, has been elected Vice Chair; she brings many years of experience in production, quality, and strategic development.
“Symbiosen is a concrete example of how businesses and society can create value together through collaboration, innovation, and responsible resource utilization. I look forward to contributing to its further development and to strengthening the partnerships that help create sustainable solutions for the future,” says Ghita Hansen.
With the new strategy and the new leadership, the course has been set for Kalundborg Symbiosis’s continued development as a driving force for circular and sustainable industry—both locally and globally.
